What Qualities Must A Good Dog Trainer Possess?
By David R. Dee
What are some of “the best of the best qualities” that a dog trainer must possess to train you and your dog, so that your dog’s obedience and behavior is qualitatively good to excellent in all kinds of environmental and social settings?
1.) The dog trainer must love people and dogs.
2.) The dog trainer must be able to communicate, with words and body language, so that both humans and dogs understand them.
3.) The dog trainer must be able to read and understand dog behavior, by observing a dog’s body language.
4.) The dog trainer must be a well-rounded person, intellectually, socially and spiritually. They must be a person who is able to relate to people and dogs of all kinds of backgrounds and potentials.
5.) The dog trainer must have received a well-rounded education and the experience of interacting with people and dogs. Whether through academic instruction and/or through being mentored by an expert dog trainer and handler!
6.) The dog trainer must be a patient, persistent person with high but achievable expectations for both the people and the dogs that they are working with in training.
7.) The dog trainer must be able to fine tune their well thought out training philosophy so as to apply it with training methods that fit each individual dog’s genetic predisposition, the dog’s temperament, and the dog’s prey drive.
8.) The dog trainer must be consistent and constant with the application of their training methods. The human handler needs to be predictable to the dog, so that the command words and hand signals, along with the corrections and engagements with the dog, are always being experienced by the dog with regularity.
9.) The dog trainer must be constantly developing themselves educationally and experientially in the art of training dogs and in their understanding of animal behavior as a human being.
10.) The dog trainer must be faithfully fair and firm with each and every dog while engaging the dog in obedience training, service work, socialization with people and other animals, and in correcting and conditioning a dog to be a well-rounded canine that is a good citizen among both people and other animals.
Meet Elaine and her
THERAPY DOG, "LILO!"
Elaine brought her French Bulldog, LILO, to approximately twelve of our "1 0n 1" ONE HOUR training sessions.
After LILO was trained to pass her AKC "Canine Good Citizen" test, and with further training and conditioning of LILO with our "trust-building" methods, Elaine was able to introduce LILO to a residential elder care facility. There LILO put her willing obedience and fine social skills on display with wonderful canine to human interactions.
[LILO is being conditioned by Elaine to sit on a chair to be close enough for a person in a wheelchair to pet her!]

Everyone loved visiting with this lovely little French Bulldog!

Meet Matthew and his
SERVICE DOG, "TOBY!"
[We share Matthew's Story with his permission...]
Due to a car accident several years ago, Matthew suffered a TBI, (traumatic brain injury), and he has frequent seizures which can cause blackouts. Though Matthew does not have to use his own wheelchair very often, you can see that we also trained and conditioned TOBY to work as Matthew's SERVICE DOG, around a wheelchair.
Matthew contacted us about TRAINING & BOARDING his Standard Poodle, TOBY, with the desire to have TOBY become his SERVICE DOG.
TOBY had to be able to provide
Matthew with both the ability to do
"mobility" and "PTSD" support work
in all kinds of conditions.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Following Pictures Show The Progression
That TOBY, and his owner MATTHEW,
made during the seven weeks that TOBY
spent in our TRAIN & BOARD program...
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The starting point with TOBY was to condition
him to LOVE TO WATCH his human handler.
(Our assistant trainer, Makayla, began by training TOBY with a hand gesture and the phrase, "WATCH ME," to help TOBY focus his eyes on the person he was working with, to keep him from focusing on other distractions.)
Of course TOBY liked receiving a little tastey treat
for learning his SERIVC DOG skills!
Matthew used our handwave over the head,
to signal and call TOBY to come to him...
Having a SERVICE DOG respond to a CALL COMMAND by coming to his owner, sitting down and looking up at Matthew, gives Matthew the ability to take hold of TOBY by his leash and to walk with TOBY without the dog running off.
When walking with his SERVICE DOG, "TOBY," the best thing for his dog to do, after TOBY has obeyed the command to "HEEL" by walking calmly at Matthew's side, is for TOBY to automatically stop and look at Matthew when Matthew stops to rest, to check traffic on a street corner, or to simply meet and greet another person that Matthew may want to visit.
TOBY needed to learn to "HEEL" by walking along the side of Matthew's wheelchair too.
Training & Conditioning TOBY to "TRUST" his owner, MATTHEW, has been a major benefit for the relationship between Matthew and his canine companion!
[After taking several steps to have TOBY trust Matthew to walk around and then across the ramp, TOBY was trusting and willing to obey Matthew's command to "DOWN & STAY" on the ramp, even with Matthew walking away from his dog.]
During TOBY'S seven week TRAINING & BOARDING time with us,
he was socialized with many different dogs.
TOBY was trained to "BACKUP" with his human hander,
by backing up with him!
TOBY was conditioned to come and lay across the lap of a person if they fell on the ground, in order to apply pressure to calm that person.
TOBY was trained to jump over an object if he needed
to get over a barrier between him and his owner.
TOBY was trained to weave around objects
in order to get to the location of his owner.
TOBY was conditioned to lay down and stay in place
on top of an elevated platform.
TOBY was taught to take directions to "GO RIGHT,"
(or, GO LEFT), on command!
Greeting another person with TOBY as his SERVICE DOG, means that Matthew is able to command TOBY to remain uninvolved with Matthew's engagement with another person.
TOBY and Matthew learned to work as a team when approaching their vehicle - Toby learned to wait to approach the van and not to pull Matthew to it.
Waiting for Matthew's command to load up,
TOBY prepares to jump up and walk into his travel crate...
Safe and secure, TOBY can travel with Matthew and his family and preform his SERVICE DOG work anywhere at anytime.
TIME TO PUT
A WELL-TRAINED SERVICE DOG
TO THE TEST!
(Matthew is telling TOBY to "HEEL"
as they walk through a shopping mall together...)
If Matthew goes shopping for something, like a pair of shoes,
then TOBY has to obey the commands to "DOWN & STAY"
while Matthew tries something on for size and checks it out,
without TOBY getting involved...
If Matthew drops something like a belt on the floor,
TOBY must be trained and conditioned to not touch
an object that he is supposed to leave alone.
When Matthew's son, Matt, joined him,
while TOBY was heeling at Matthew's side,
then TOBY must just keep his focus on his handler,
and not be distracted by another person walking in his company.
SEVEN WEEKS OF
TRAINING & BOARDING...
After TRAINING for service dog work and earning his AKC,
"Canine Good Citizen" status, TOBY is a SERVICE DOG in action...
Now TEAM TOBY can exit not only out of a shopping mall gracefully, but Matthew and his SERVICE DOG, TOBY, can enter into all kinds of new and wonderful places, among all kinds of different people and other dogs, and TEAM TOBY will do great things together -
GOOD WORK, "TEAM TOBY!!!"

"A TRAINED DOG
WILL NOT OBEY
AN UNTRAINED HUMAN!"
* * *
* * *
The picture above is of our resident
German Shepherd Dog, "TROOPER!"
The "riveted" eye contact that you can observe, as Trooper gives me his full and undivided "focused" attention, is not an accidental lucky camera shot!
TROOPER was TRAINED by me, as a "TRAINED TRAINER," to "WATCH ME" by my use of an excited engagement method to give TROOPER a welcoming invitation to keep his eyes focused on me while I took his picture!
Trooper did not train himself to do this kind of thing. Trooper did not happen by chance to look in my direction when I had my camera ready to take his picture.
As a "TRAINED HUMAN BEING" I have "TRAINED MY DOG" to "OBEY ME," to ENGAGE WITH ME, TO LIVE WITH ME, PLAY WITH ME, WORK WITH ME, to EXPERIENCE LIFE WITH ME, as TROOPER'S TRAINED HUMAN BEING who owns a TRAINED, OBEDIENT DOG!
...And this does not happen by some accidental, lucky outcome without my HUMAN UNDERSTANDING and LEARNED SKILL TO TRAIN MY DOG TO ENGAGE WITH ME and WILLINGLY OBEY MY COMMANDS!
* * *
In my many, many, many years of working with all kinds of dogs I have never yet observed a canine of any age, breed, or temperament, thoroughly obey an untrained human being!
BUT, I HAVE OBSERVED many human beings who falsely, or assumimngly, expect that if their puppy or adult dog, or even someone else's dog, is "TRAINED," then that dog will automatically "OBEY" them if it is "GOOD DOG!" After all, only "BAD DOGS" do not "OBEY" a human being; "RIGHT?"
"WRONG!!!"
* * *
"A TRAINED DOG
WILL NOT OBEY
AN UNTRAINED HUMAN!"
* * *
Are you tired of being
an "UNTRAINED
HUMAN BEING"
who owns a puppy
or adult dog that
will not "OBEY" you?
Then call me and lets work as a TEAM,
with you and your wonderful puppy or adult dog,
to TRAIN YOU AS A "HUMAN" how to
TRAIN YOUR "CANINE" to OBEY YOU
as a "WELL-TRAINED HUMAN BEING!"
